If you have some extra money that you want to invest, but you don’t trust the present real estate industry or other types of business, then you should direct your attention towards something new, such as gold coins. There are a few types of gold coins: bullion coins, rare coins, and commemorative coins. The latter two represent great opportunity because they their value increases with the passing of time. First of all, their value is measured by their weight in precious metal and second, the fact that they belong to a limited issue makes them very attractive for collectors, turning them into even more valuable coins.

Types of Commemorative Gold Coins

The Columbian Exposition Half Dollar, issued in 1892, was the very first commemorative gold coin. It celebrated four hundred years since the Expedition led by Christopher Columbus; this is very important for Americans because that expedition resulted in the discovery of America. No less than one hundred and fifty-four commemorative coins were issued up to 1954. The program was banned until 1982 when the US mint decided to reinitiate it. The Liberty Coins, valuing $5, are among the most popular commemorative coins. The Statue of Liberty $5 coin, issued in 1986 by the US Mint, celebrated one hundred years of life for one of the most important American symbols: the Statue of Liberty. A series of Liberty coins were minted; they were the result of Elizabeth Jones’ work and have a very realistic image of the crown and the face of Lady Liberty on one of their sides; the other side contains a flying eagle. There are also other types of Liberty Coins: the $10 Liberty Head and the $20 Liberty Head. The special feature of the $20 Liberty Coin is the fact that 90% of it is gold while only 10% is copper. The $10 Liberty Head also has a special feature: its aspect was inspired by a portrait that belongs to Venus, in the conception of Christian Gobrecht. Last but not least in the series of Liberty coins are the $2 and a half Liberty Head. This type of coin was minted between 1840 and 1907 and they are some of the most valuable of the series, as well as some of the rarest.

There are hundreds of other commemorative coins all deserving our attention because they represent one of the solutions for saving money in these days of economic recession that seems endless.
